Our ethics and policies
To help conserve the environment, HSBC invests in energy-efficient facilities and encourages employees to save natural resources. It is also the Bank's policy to buy goods and services from suppliers who share our commitment to continual improvements in environmental performance and waste reduction.
An environmental policy clause has been included in tenders and contracts with our suppliers to ensure they support our corporate sustainability policy and follow socially responsible and sustainable business practices.
- Setting targets: The Bank sets environmental targets for our catering and building facility suppliers each year to reduce waste, energy and water consumption as well as emissions from electricity. More about our environmental targets.
- Organising events: We work with our service providers to organise roadshows and exhibitions promoting the Bank's environmental initiatives and targets to reduce, reuse and recycle. Find out more about our efforts to manage direct impacts.
- Environmentally friendly materials: The Bank and its suppliers support the use of environmentally friendly materials. For example, we use sugar-cane-starch lunch boxes and napkins, biodegradable plastic bags and recycled paper bags. Find out more.
- Conserving resources and recycling: Our energy improvement project launched in the head office building which included using energy-efficient florescent tubes, upgrading the lighting control system and reviewing automatic air-conditioning and lighting schedules. HSBC Precision Printing also works with stationery suppliers to reduce packaging and collect carton boxes for reuse.
HSBC encouraged one of its printing suppliers to become one of the first printers in Hong Kong to obtain Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification on paper and printing, an accreditation for responsible forest management.
Working with our caterer, we achieved ISO 14001 accreditation on environmental management for the catering outlets.
