To help promote coaching education in Hong Kong the Hongkong Bank Foundation sponsors the Hong Kong Coach Education Programme (HKCEP) organised by the Hong Kong Coaching Committee.
HKCEP is the only scheme in Hong Kong that supports local coaches. Since the programme's inception in 1992, the Foundation has donated more than HKD21 million, enabling over 20,000 coaches to receive training and accreditation.
Coaches are more than just masters of motivation. They are also counsellors, mentors and friends, providing praise, encouragement and guidance to athletes. Each year Hong Kong's leading coaches are recognised for their outstanding contribution to developing athletes at the Hongkong Bank Foundation Coaching Awards.
About 40% of teachers who supervise school sports do not have a coaching qualification. Thanks to HSBC's sponsorship, to date more than 500 teachers have received coaching accreditation.
The Hong Kong Sports Institute's School Coach Accreditation Programme, a major part of HKCEP, is a programme that gives non-physical education teachers the opportunity to receive formal coach training and become qualified coaches.
The Foundation also provides scholarships for students studying the Bachelor of Education in Sports Training at Beijing Sports University.
